MATCHMAKER, MATCHMAKER, MAKE ME A MATCН…

When we say that CHAT SLPs focus on rapport and relationship building, we mean it!

Enter Maya and Franco, both longtime CHAT clients.

Recently, Maya has been working on self-advocacy, comprehension, and vocabulary, while Franco has been focused on speech intelligibility, repairing communication breakdowns, and comprehension.

Maya and Franco attend the same high school. Their families have known each other for years and are aware they both come to CHAT for speech therapy.

Last fall, Maya and Franco were exploring the teenage rite of passage called homecoming.

Franco was planning to ask a girl he’d never met. Maya planned to go with friends because she didn’t have a date. And in the background, their CHAT SLPs were saying, “Wouldn’t it be cute if…?”

Coincidentally, Franco had a change of heart and wanted to ask Maya.

He consulted his mom, who consulted Maya’s mom. She was supportive, stating, “this would be great for Maya because she’s working on making her own decisions.” Maya agreed it was a good idea, and the hoco-proposal planning began.

Using skills he had practiced at CHAT, Franco surprised Maya one Friday afternoon with a sign, her favorite candy, and flowers, asking her to be his homecoming date.

Maya said, “YES!” and agreed it would be great to go as friends.

Thrilled to hear that Franco and Maya would be going to homecoming together, their CHAT SLPs helped them prepare toward a successful night. Franco practiced questions to ask at the dance, and Maya worked through deciding when in the night she wanted to meet Franco. Ultimately, Franco attended the pre-dance party at Maya’s house, and all reports indicated a great night for both.

There is nothing better than seeing our clients use the skills they learn in therapy to achieve their life goals, and this sweet story is one of the best!

This month, we wish you friendship and love, and hope this story brought you joy.
