What’s the saying?
“Out of the mouth of babes?”
Seven-year-old Jimmy took it to a whole new level with the help of a little technology. Please don’t try this at home, but we thought you might find inspiration in the recent breakthrough of one of our kiddos.
During his speech teletherapy session, asked to place the webcam closer to his mouth to get a better view of how he was attempting to articulate the “R” sound, Jimmy thought he’d help his SLP by placing the device IN his mouth. You guessed it…his therapist was able to see what he did wrong and explain how to do it right. Moments later, he made his very first “R” sound; now he’s on his way to using it consistently, which will help him be understood and give him confidence!
…well, Jimmy has a lot to be proud of, and we can’t help smiling along with him!
CHAT’s ability to pivot to 100 percent teletherapy at the start of the pandemic has been instrumental in serving kids like Jimmy, who may have few—if any—other options to overcome communication disorders. As one of the only nonprofits in the country dedicated to speech and language services, CHAT has been inundated with demand during this unprecedented time from families who lack access to therapy, particularly from under-resourced communities of color. We need your help to serve more of these children.
Many years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” COVID has widened the already enormous gap in healthcare access, which we work to close with each child we serve. Please help us by donating tomorrow during Giving Tuesday.
